The flexible endoscope, invented some 50 years ago, enabled doctors to look inside of the gastrointestinal tract to diagnose disease. Today the same instrument is used to treat many diseases that once required more invasive surgery.

This video demonstrates a combined endoscopic and laparoscopic technique for the resection of a large, spreading caecal adenoma incorporating both endoscopic submucosal dissection and partial caecectomy. The procedure allowed complete resection with sparing of both the ileocaecal valve and the appendix.
